Saw Cuts and Grooves: Precision Engineering Meets Modern Design
Achieve a clean, architectural look with Saw Cuts or Grooved Lines. This technique involves creating sharp, geometric joint lines in your concrete to provide both structural benefits and a high-end aesthetic finish. While traditionally used for expansion joints to control cracking, these lines are now a popular design choice, transforming a standard slab into a sophisticated, tiled-effect surface. Whether cut into the surface with a specialised concrete saw after curing or tooled into the wet concrete, this finish offers a crisp, professional appearance for any project.
WHY CHOOSE SAW CUTS OR GROOVED LINES?
Architectural Geometric Appeal
Saw cutting allows you to break up large expanses of concrete with precise, straight lines. By creating a grid or diamond pattern, you can mimic the look of large-format tiles or pavers without the high cost or the risk of weeds growing through grout lines. This “tiled” look is a favourite for modern driveways, minimalist patios, and contemporary interior floors.
Essential Crack Control
Concrete naturally expands and contracts with temperature changes. By strategically placing saw cuts (often called control joints), we “tell” the concrete where to crack. These deep, clean lines act as planned weak points, ensuring that any structural movement happens at the bottom of the groove where it remains invisible, preserving the pristine look of your surface.
Versatile Design Flexibility
Because saw cuts are made after the concrete has hardened, they offer incredible precision. We can create custom borders, geometric shapes, or offset patterns that align perfectly with your home’s architecture. This method is compatible with plain, coloured, or even honed concrete, adding a layer of detail that elevates the entire project.
HOW IT WORKS
Achieving perfectly straight, clean lines requires specialised equipment and exact timing:
Pour and Initial Finish: The concrete is poured and finished to your desired texture (such as machine troweled or honed).
Curing to the “Sweet Spot”: For saw cuts, we wait until the concrete has cured sufficiently to support the weight of the saw and operator, but before it becomes too hard and brittle. This timing—usually within 24 hours—prevents “ravelling” or messy edges.
Precision Cutting: Using a high-speed concrete saw with a diamond-tipped blade, our team marks out the geometric pattern and executes the cuts. We maintain a consistent depth (typically 1/4 of the slab’s thickness) to ensure the control joint functions correctly.
Cleaning and Optional Grouting: Once the lines are cut, the dust is thoroughly removed. Depending on your design preference, the lines can be left open for a deep-shadow look or filled with a matching or contrasting coloured grout/polyurea for a seamless, easy-to-clean surface.
Please Note: Saw Cuts and Grooved Lines are suitable for both interior and exterior applications, providing a perfect blend of structural necessity and high-end visual design.

WHAT IS COLOURED CONCRETE?
Coloured concrete is the same substance as your generic ready-mix concrete, just with some added pigmentation for your desired colour. It is made up of cement, aggregates, water, and the colour pigment is added in the mixing process. When you use coloured concrete, you can choose whether you want to use this opportunity for the concrete to blend in with its surroundings or pull all the attention as the focal point. Adding colour to your concrete gives a new dimension to your project; this way, you can also accurately colour match any new concrete with an existing pour.
COLOUR CHART
We have a huge range of colours to choose from for your coloured concrete needs. We have various hues of brown, red, green, grey and yellow, something for everyone’s concrete taste. You can browse our range of coloured concrete available below:
